IAS accredits testing  laboratories involved in the testing of products related to Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Energy Star® program requirements. This includes Household and Commercial Appliances, Lighting, Fans, HVAC Equipment, Building Products,  Commercial Food Service Equipment, Electronics and Office Equipment, Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment and Smart Home Energy Management Systems.

ENERGY STAR® is a joint program of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Energy (DOE). Its goal is to help consumers, businesses, and industry save money and protect the environment through the adoption of energy-efficient products and practices.

The Energy Star program operates by lowering the cost of production so consumers can more easily afford energy-efficient products. The label makes a product more attractive to consumers, thus an incentive for manufacturers to become more energy-efficient.

Per EPA, “Since 1992, ENERGY STAR and its partners have helped American families and businesses save 5 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity, avoid more than $450 billion in energy costs, and achieve 4 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions.”

Laboratories are accredited to ISO/IEC standard 17025, ‘General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories’ and the competency of the laboratories to perform the testing of the products to Energy Star requirements is evaluated on a periodic basis.

Cleaning/sanitation plays a critical role in everyday activities and has significant impact on processes, products, environment and human health.

Testing laboratory accreditation:

IAS accredits cleaning/sanitation testing laboratories to ISO/IEC Standard 17025 and appropriate industry specific sanitation and cleaning standards (e.g. ‘ISSA Clean Standard’). The laboratories are tasked with – examining physical evidence, performing various tests, interpreting data from these tests, reporting the data. Their labs analyze the various samples received from the customers. In addition, they utilize various scientific instruments and equipment for carrying out a variety of tests on physical evidence.

This accreditation demonstrates to the marketplace and to regulators that the laboratories have met the IAS accreditation requirements and are periodically monitored for compliance.  In the end, service providers will have a standardized, efficient system devoted to quality of testing performance with increased accountability.

What is ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation?

ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is formal recognition that a testing or calibration laboratory has demonstrated competence to perform specific tests or calibrations. Accreditation evaluates both the laboratory’s management system and its technical competence, including personnel, methods, equipment, metrological traceability, and the validity of results. This applies as well to sampling organizations, where samples collected will be forwarded for subsequent testing.

How do I get my testing laboratory ISO/IEC 17025 accredited?

The process generally begins by selecting an accreditation body such as IAS and defining the tests and methods to be included in your requested scope of accreditation. The laboratory then implements the applicable ISO/IEC 17025 requirements and submits an application and supporting documentation. IAS reviews the documentation and conducts an assessment of the laboratory’s management system and technical competence. Any identified nonconformities must be satisfactorily addressed before accreditation is granted. The IAS process includes application, document review, selection of qualified technical assessors, assessment, corrective action when required, and an accreditation decision.

What are the requirements for ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation?

ISO/IEC 17025 establishes requirements for the competence, impartiality, and consistent operation of laboratories. Requirements address personnel competence, facilities and environmental conditions, equipment, metrological traceability, externally provided products and services, test methods, method validation or verification, sampling, handling of test items, technical records, measurement uncertainty where applicable, ensuring the validity of results, reporting results, internal audits, corrective actions, and management reviews. In addition to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard requirements, the laboratories are required to follow any IAS related policies available on IAS website. AC 89 documents sets the main accreditation criteria for the IAS Testing Laboratories’ accreditation program.

What is the difference between ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and ISO 9001 certification?

ISO 9001 certification focuses primarily on an organization’s quality management system. ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation goes further for laboratories by evaluating both the management system and the laboratory’s technical competence to perform specific testing or calibration activities. For a testing laboratory seeking formal recognition of its technical competence, ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is the applicable conformity assessment activity.
