Brewer Earns CCT Recertification

IAS Requires CCT for Accreditation by 2009

Hershal C. Brewer

Hershal C. Brewer, head of the IAS Calibration Lab program has been recertified as an American Society for Quality (ASQ) Certified Calibration Technician (CCT). This certification recognizes that Brewer has the "level of knowledge and experience associated with the duties and responsibilities of a mid-level calibration technician per the consensus expectations of hundreds of calibration/metrology professionals," according to the ASQ.

To-date, Brewer is the only ASQ-certified metrology professional in charge of an accrediting body calibration laboratory accreditation program. IAS believes that since the requirement is placed on calibration laboratories, then IAS should-and does-lead by example.

According to ASQ, CCT certification can be obtained by meeting prerequisites (documented evidence of minimum education/training/experience) and successful completion of the CCT exam. The focus of the CCT program on the mid-level calibration technician is deemed by the CCT program committee to be the most advantageous for industry.

Jerry Schwarz, President of A-Cal agrees adding, "This certification gives my technicians legitimacy. My customers understand that my technicians are professionals thus they have more confidence in our services. And it's good for the technician, for both personal pride and peer recognition."

A-Cal currently has 10 technicians. As each becomes eligible for the CCT exam, they go through the training and testing.

IAS is the only accreditation body that has stipulated that all IAS-accredited calibration laboratories must have ASQ certification to receive accreditation by December 2009, a move that is expected to raise the bar and provide great benefit to the industry.
