CALBO Attendees Seek Accreditation Possibilities
![]() |
As California code enforcement officials prepare to implement the 2006 International Building Code, many are also looking for ways to best demonstrate professional competence to the communities they serve.
For some, accreditation is a clear indicator of competence. Building code professionals at the recent California Building Officials (CALBO) Annual Business Meeting, March 12-16, 2007, had an opportunity to learn more about the International Accreditation Service (IAS) Building Department Accreditation program. Those attending the meeting included California building officials, technical staff and other agencies that are part of the building code process.
During this time, IAS Senior Accreditation Officer Gaddis Farmer and IAS Project Coordinator Kellee Lostaunau had the opportunity to talk with building officials about the benefits of building department accreditation.
The most common question asked of IAS staff was, "How can building department accreditation help or benefit my organization?"
"The accreditation process confirms that you are conducting your business at the highest level of public safety," Farmer responded. "It can provide a building department with a clear understanding of its strengths and weaknesses, a guideline for areas of improvement, and reduce potential problems down the road. IAS uses a standardized criteria designed to verify if building jurisdictions operate with efficiency and quality."
In the last month, a number of CALBO building officials have contacted IAS for more information about the program or for an application. If you'd like to find out more about the IAS Building Department Accreditation program, please contact Kellee Lostaunau at 562-699-0541, etx. 3448.
