IAS Heads to the Hill

Every year, the International Code Council and its governmental members take the building and fire code message directly to the nation’s top law makers in Washington D.C., through the Annual Capitol Hill Day.

This year’s 2008 Building Safety Week Capitol Hill Day will include an International Accreditation Service (IAS) contingent consisting of the organization's Board of Directors and executive staff. Chaired by Majed Dabdoub, Supervising Building Plans Examiner, City of Cinncinnati, Ohio, the IAS Board includes Ravi Shah, vice chair, Building Official and Director of Urban Development, City of Carrollton, Texas; John Barrios, Manager, Construction Services Division, City of Tampa, Florida; Michael Bouse, Building and Fire Safety Director, City of Henderson, Nevada; Isam Hasenin, Director, Department of Building Inspection, City and County of San Francisco, California; Ronald Lynn, Building Official, Clark County, Nevada; Curtis Mann, Chief Building Official, City of New Orleans, Lousiana; and Guy Tomberlin, Code Specialist, Division of Commercial Inspections, Land Development Services, Fairfax County, Virginia.

The 2008 Building Safety Week Capitol Hill Day will also continue the campaign for the Federal Community Building Code Administration Grant program while also focusing on support for other legislation such as hazard mitigation bills, fire safety efforts, and wind storm damage and earthquake reduction bills.

IAS is deeply involved in measuring the effectiveness of code enforcement by its Building Department/Code Enforcement Agency Accreditation program. Currently six building departments—City of Las Vegas, Nevada; City of Henderson, Nevada; City of Plano, Texas; School District of Palm Beach County, Florida; City of West Palm Beach, Florida; and the City of Tallahassee, Florida—are accredited under the program, with approximately 25 more going through the process.
