ENERGY STAR® Accreditation Program for Testing Laboratories

Testing laboratories seeking to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ENERGY STAR® requirements for testing products can seek ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation from the International Accreditation Service (IAS).

New Accreditations / Scope Expansions

IAS accepts applications from laboratories seeking to become accredited, as well as requests from existing accredited laboratories to modify their current scope of accreditation in order to demonstrate their ability to test in accordance with these new requirements.

The Accreditation Process

Laboratories seeking accreditation to meet the ENERGY STAR®  Program requirements will be assessed by IAS to verify that they are in full compliance with ISO/IEC 17025:2005.

The process for becoming an IAS-accredited testing laboratory begins with the testing laboratory’s submittal of an application, applicable fees, and a quality manual. An IAS accreditation officer is selected to partner with the laboratory throughout the accreditation process, beginning with a review of the quality manual and the requested scope of accreditation. Once the quality manual has been reviewed and approved, IAS selects an assessment team specifically suited to the requested scope of accreditation. The assessment team conducts an on-site assessment of the laboratory and develops an assessment report. Once a laboratory has satisfied EPA and IAS accreditation requirements and demonstrated its technical competence, an accreditation certificate is issued.

Detailed testing requirements, along with information on registering as a testing laboratory with the EPA can be found on the ENERGY STAR website.

U.S. EPA Qualified Accreditation Body

IAS meets the U.S. EPA requirement for an accreditation body to be a signatory to an internationally recognized mutual recognition arrangement (MRA) such as the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) in order to accredit testing laboratories to ENERGY STAR requirements.

IAS is a full member  and signatory to the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement. IAS accredited laboratories' test reports and calibration certificates are accepted as equivalents by other ILAC MRA signatories. IAS is also a signatory to the Asia Pacific Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (APLAC) Mutual Recognition Arrangement.
