New York City (NYC) Special Inspection Agency
Accreditation Program
Effective January 1, 2009, agencies conducting Special Inspections under the 2008 New York City (NYC) Construction Codes and the NYC Building Departments Special Inspection Rule must register electronically as Special Inspection Agencies. Under the NYC Construction Codes, a special inspector is defined as a qualified individual employed by a Special Inspection Agency. Specific categories of special inspection and NYC qualifications for special inspectors are set forth in the NYC Special Inspections Qualifications.
IAS is now accepting applications for NYC Special Inspection Agency Accreditation under its IBC Special Inspection Agency Program.
New York City Construction Codes Call for IAS Accreditation
Along with its adoption of the 2003 International Building Code, the New York City Construction Codes now include a requirement that all special inspection agencies must be accredited by IAS by 2010. Click here for an overview and timelines for accreditation.
IAS requires that NYC special inspection agency applicants submit quality documentation in accordance with the requirements of the IAS Accreditation Criteria for IBC Special Inspection Agencies (AC291) with the exception of Section 6.0. Additionally, IAS will assess applicants for documented evidence of compliance with the NYC Qualifications under the categories for which each agency seeks accreditation. The assessment process includes onsite witnessing of Special Inspection Agency inspectors conducting inspections in the field. The NYC categories of inspection and inspector qualifications can be found here.
