ASPE CEO Kendzel Appointed to IAS Technical Advisory Council

James G. Kendzel, Executive Director and CEO of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE) has accepted an appointment to the International Accreditation Service (IAS) Technical Advisory Council (TAC) for the newly approved IAS Personnel Certification Body Accreditation Program.

The program (AC474), approved in October, will recognize companies and organizations that provide the highest quality personnel certification services. It is also an expansion of the IAS Work Force Accreditation Program that includes accreditation for training agencies (AC371) and curriculum developers (AC372). TAC members are senior managers selected from personnel certification bodies, and private and public-sector agencies that use these services.  The IAS Board of Directors authorizes committee members.

TAC activities relate to IAS accreditation criteria and IAS Rules of Procedure. The councils also advise on international standards related to accreditation and conformity assessment and other subjects as requested by the IAS management.

“Jim Kendzel is internationally recognized for his longstanding leadership in both standards development and accreditation of personnel certification bodies,” said IAS Work Force Qualification Program Manager David Nelson. “Jim’s continued leadership in the industry and service to the IAS Technical Advisory Council is notable.”

Kendzel comes to the IAS Technical Advisory Council with a tremendous amount of knowledge and expertise in certification and quality assurance. Throughout his career he has served on various boards, committees and councils for organizations such as the American National Standards Institute, ASTM International, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society of Sanitary Engineering, American Council of Independent Laboratories  and the International Code Council. He is a member of the World Plumbing Council.

Kendzel has served on the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Working Group 30, which led to revisions to ISO 17024 Conformity assessment -- General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons.

Kendzel previously was Vice President of Quality Assurance and served in other senior leadership positions for NSF International, a leading not-for-profit, third-party provider of public health and environmental standards, testing and certification services.

While employed at SmithBucklin, the world's largest association management company, he was the Executive Director for the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE), an organization that represents personnel certification bodies throughout North America. He also worked closely with the ICE Board of Directors to develop and implement overall growth strategy for the organization to ensure that resource utilization is in alignment with achieving short and long-term strategic objectives.

IAS is a recognized accreditation body and a nonprofit, public benefit corporation.  IAS accredits personnel certification bodies, training agencies, curriculum developers, testing and calibration laboratories, product certification agencies, special inspection agencies, inspection programs for metal building manufacturers, fabricator inspection programs, inspection agencies, field evaluation bodies, building departments, fire prevention departments and building department service providers. A subsidiary of the International Code Council (ICC), IAS is one of the leading accreditation bodies in the United States and a signatory to several international mutual recognition arrangements (MRAs).
